A Message from the District Manager (September)

Tim Costello

I am very excited about our new communication channel “Dallas Proud”.  This blog will give me an opportunity to “talk” to you about matters going on within our district.  We will also use the blog to highlight employees, work units and stations and post offices that excel in providing our customers with the outstanding service they deserve.
In this first post, I’d like to share some information about myself and about the district in which we work.  I am a 30-year employee and have served in numerous field, area and headquarters positions.  Before I came to Dallas, I was the District Manager of the Alabama District.  And before that, I served as the Eastern Area, Manager of Delivery Programs in Pittsburgh, PA.  I have also been the Manager of Operations Programs Support in both the Atlanta and Mississippi Districts.  Every position in which I have worked, has prepared me for the job I do today, including the 10 years I spent as a City Letter Carrier in Jackson, Mississippi.
The same can be said for you.  Whatever position you hold today, is a key to your future.  Whether you just started with the Postal Service and are planning on making it your career or whether you are a 30+ year veteran employee like me, you should have a goal in mind.  Continuous learning, performing your job to the best of your ability and taking advantage of Postal Service resources like the upcoming Career Conference will help you achieve that goal.

The Dallas District is made up of more than 350 Post Offices and three Mail Processing Centers and employs more than 11,000 career employees.  It covers a geographic area of over 31,000 square miles and serves more than 6 million customers.  A district as large as ours will always have opportunities for advancement.  I would like you to keep that in mind when thinking about your career goals.
In addition to the great number of career opportunities, we also have an enormous responsibility to collect, process and deliver the mail and packages that our customers entrust to us each and every day.  It’s a responsibility that the Dallas District has always taken great pride in upholding.  Maintaining a welcoming environment in our retail lobbies and responding to customer concerns timely, will demonstrate to our customers that their business is our top priority.
I look forward to the opportunity to communicate with you in this way and encourage you to make the “Dallas Proud” blog one of your favorites.  All of the information included in this blog has been placed there with you in mind.  Enjoy and come back again soon!

Sulphur Springs, TX, Lead Retail Associate Christine Miles

It took the savvy business smarts of three Retail Associates to change a business’ bottom line.  When Retail Associates Darin Deaton, Brad McCool, and Anita Riggs informed Christine Miles, Lead Retail Associate at the Sulphur Springs Post Office, about the huge postage due fees being incurred by a customer, she had to act.  The Bookworm Box, a monthly book club shipper, was shipping an average of 2,400 packages a month and paying hundreds of dollars on returns with a local competitor.  Christine knew the USPS could save significant time and money.

With help of OIC, Ty Petit, Christine approached Lin Reynolds, the Director of The Bookworm Box, and told her about the USPS’ priority mail value proposition — quicker delivery with no cost for returns or address correction.  Lin happily agreed.

Christine created an employee engagement lead requesting assistance that was sent to Kathy Angerami, an A/Business Development Specialist for the Dallas District, who promptly called Lin to explain the options.  Kathy informed Lin about our Priority supplies, Stamps.com, and Endicia.com for commercial base prices.  Because Lin had a customized Purple Bookworm Box, she decided to keep her packaging with our Priority services shipping by weight and zone and using Endicia.com for her postage.

Christine saw Lin the day after they dropped off their 2,400 packages. Lin stated, “They are so happy” and have already communicated the shipping changes to their customers.

This TEAM work resulted in a $244,500 sale and significant savings for The Bookworm Box!
