Focus on the
Positive
Have you ever
gotten home from work and realized that you had a negative or bad day. From
the moment we wake up until the second we go to bed, we are engaged in a series
of interactions with others. Social science has estimated that we have
approximately 20,000 individual moments of connection with others every single
day. Interactions are either positive or
negative and can greatly affect our
well-being, mood, and outlook on life. We face a choice regarding how we
respond or initiate these moments of connection.
How can we intentionally create positive connections throughout the day? It begins by paying attention to our impact upon others. It begins by recognizing that you have the choice to respond to any situation in a positive, negative, or neutral manner, regardless of how other people behave. It also begins by recognizing that you have control over your response, even if you are dealing with others who choose negative reactions during the day.
Today’s assignment is this: Focus on the positive today. Pay attention to your responses to others and your reactions to their behaviors. If you come across someone who is whining or complaining, make a choice to say something positive or, at the least, ignore the negativity. Create a daily notebook that you can write in each day about the positive experiences you have and write at least one thing in that notebook for the next week, month, or even year and beyond.
