Your Team and You ePromotion - Day 5

Focus on the Positive

Have you ever gotten home from work and realized that you had a negative or bad day.  From the moment we wake up until the second we go to bed, we are engaged in a series of interactions with others.  Social science has estimated that we have approximately 20,000 individual moments of connection with others every single day.  Interactions are either positive or
negative and can greatly affect our well-being, mood, and outlook on life.  We face a choice regarding how we respond or initiate these moments of connection.
How can we intentionally create positive connections throughout the day?  It begins by paying attention to our impact upon others.  It begins by recognizing that you have the choice to respond to any situation in a positive, negative, or neutral manner, regardless of how other people behave.  It also begins by recognizing that you have control over your response, even if you are dealing with others who choose negative reactions during the day.
Today’s assignment is this:  Focus on the positive today.  Pay attention to your responses to others and your reactions to their behaviors.  If you come across someone who is whining or complaining, make a choice to say something positive or, at the least, ignore the negativity.  Create a daily notebook that you can write in each day about the positive experiences you have and write at least one thing in that notebook for the next week, month, or even year and beyond.

Your Team and You ePromotion - Day 4

Greet People Today

Sometimes it is easy to feel isolated, even when around a lot of people.  It is easy to get into the habit at work: to punch in and start working, avoiding people and conversation.  That is not a good habit for any team member.  Teams are about camaraderie, working together, and doing the best you can each and every day.

Why are there times we try to avoid people?  Sometimes it is because we are uninterested in what they typically talk about. Sometimes it is because we have other issues or problems we are facing and sometimes it is because it takes a lot of energy to deal with people day in and day out and we don’t feel like we have the energy.  However, it is important that you look at your reasons for your avoidance.  It is important that people feel acknowledged by their peers.

Pay attention to your surroundings and the people you see on a day-to-day basis.  If you have been avoiding someone, because you dislike what they normally talk about, perhaps you can introduce a new topic that you believe they may be interested in.  If you feel isolated because of a lack of energy, remember that the more people you have to support you, the lighter your burden will be. Connect with someone today and push yourself to interact with others.  You will be surprised at the result.
