Path to Promotion
Are you headed in the right direction? Is what you’re doing TODAY getting you to where you want to be TOMORROW? The Postal Service wants to ensure we continue to grow our business, pursue innovation, and invest in our future by helping to develop employees. On Sunday, April 28, the Dallas District will hold its Career Conference in Grapevine at the Great Wolf Lodge.
I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to expand your network and advance your career. Many of the Dallas District current senior leaders came from the ranks of our employees, and chances are your manager or supervisor got their start as a carrier, clerk, or maintenance employee.
There is a great opportunity ahead. Much of our workforce is either now or will soon be eligible to retire. When upper management retires, it creates a domino effect, providing opportunities for others. Right now is a prime time for all employees to make the decision to move up in the organization. Attending the Dallas Career conference is a great start.
Here are some other things you can do to put you on the path to a promotion.
Put yourself out there. Sign up to be a safety ambassador or volunteer for special projects or assignments, such as kaizen teams. Doing so helps you learn about the organization and it helps others get to know you.
Keep up with new strategies. Make sure you understand what the Postal Service is doing by listening carefully to stand-up, safety and service talks. Stay informed by signing up for LINK mobile (the USPS news service), reading the district and area newsletter, visiting the USPS intranet (LiteBlue).
Find your champion. Identify someone to work with you as a mentor or coach – a person who can offer guidance on your next steps in advancement.
By taking charge of your development, you help secure not only your future, but the future of the Postal Service. For more information about the upcoming conference, please see the following page in this newsletter.
