Employee Engagement: Dallas, TX, Computerized Forwarding System department held a contest to see who could find the most history about the United States Postal Service.  Markup Clerk Scott Boyle won the contest and received a $25 gift card. Some of the facts that he found are listed below.
 
George Washington has been on more stamps than any other person.
 
The Postal Service has an unofficial mascot, Owney, the well-traveled terrier.  Owney was put down in 1897 after he bit someone and is now on display in the National Postal Museum.
 
Mail is delivered to the city of Loma Linda, California on Sundays where there is a large population of Seventh Day Adventists, whose Sabbath is Saturday, not Sunday.  However, mail is not delivered to Loma Linda on Saturday.
 
USPS is the second largest employer.  Walmart is number one.
 
The most common Post Office name is Clinton with 26 locations. 
 
The lowest ZIP Code is 00501 – IRS in Holtsville, NY. The highest ZIP Code is 99950 – Ketchikan, AK.
 
The longest rural delivery route is 182.75 miles daily and delivers to 280 central delivery boxes and one regular delivery box.
 
The Postal Service ordered more than 700 million rubber bands in 2016.
 
The Postal Service moves mail by planes, trains, trucks, cars, boats, ferries, helicopters, subways, float plains, hovercraft, mules, bicycles and feet.
