A message from the District Manager Scott Hooper
Highlighting Our Business Customers
This week marks National Postal Customer Council (PCC) Week, where we take time to recognize and appreciate the partnership between our organization and business mailers. PCC week provides local PCC audiences (businesses, non-profits, colleges/universities, mail service providers, printers, etc.) the opportunity to hear from and interact with Postal officers and executives.
Each of us, no matter what job we perform, has a stake in the success of the PCCs. When you provide the best possible service, you help build our business and strengthen the partnership with our PCC members. Don’t stop there, though. I encourage all employees to take time and become familiar with all the products and services we provide. Submit a lead through one of our Employee Engagement Programs, like Clerks Care, Customer Connect, Business Connect, Rural Reach. We also recently launched our newest same-day local delivery service, Connect Local, here in the Texas 1 district.
It’s our responsibility to grow the business by actively engaging customers and finding new sources of revenue. And remember that doing the simple things also grows the business, whether it’s being courteous on the phone, providing friendly service at retail and BME counters, accurately sorting mail and packages, properly scanning and handling packages, and delivering in a safe, efficient and courteous manner.
If we don’t take care of our customers, someone else will. Our business mailers – in fact, every customer – deserves our best effort every day. As we take time to celebrate PCC Week, let’s be sure to continue providing superior service every week of the year. Thank you for helping serve not just our business customers, but all of our customers.

As Classes Resume, Watch Out for Students
Many schools resumed classes either last week or this week, and I want to take this opportunity to remind all our employees who operate motor vehicles to watch out for children — especially those who are distracted. I urge you as a driver, to take extra precautions to avoid accidents by staying alert and driving defensively. Children can be unpredictable and don’t always look both ways before crossing streets.
We can prepare for the back-to-school driving season by following a few simple safety tips:
• Slow Down. The speed limit in school zones is 20 mph, so be sure to cover the brake pedal, while scanning the road for kids when entering a marked school zone.
• Yield to School Buses. Exercise caution when approaching a school bus or driving near bus stops. NEVER pass a school bus from either direction while its lights are flashing, and children are entering or exiting the bus. Drivers must remain stopped until the bus begins to move.
• Provide plenty of distance from bicyclists, especially young or novice riders.
• Never talk on your phone or send text messages while driving.
• Avoid handing mail directly to children from a delivery vehicle. If children approach, get out of the vehicle and ask them to move away. Double-check around the entire vehicle before proceeding.
• Never back up to redeliver a missed box. Get out of the vehicle and walk back, if you can do so safely.
• Adjust your mirrors to be able to see around your vehicle before you leave your office.
Thank you for your continued service to our customers, who trust us to deliver the mail safely, efficiently, and reliably. Remember that you represent the U.S. Postal Service when you get behind the wheel, so let’s protect our most precious commodity — our children.

Mckinney, TX, Main Post Office (MPO) Rural Carrier Rebecca Menchaca (above) received a customer compliment.
Dear USPS,
Our mail carrier is so kind and amazing at her job. She goes above and beyond. I have an autistic son who is obsessed with watching for trucks, especially the mail truck. When we told her how much he loves watching for her, she brought him a little toy mail truck of his own! He was over the moon and has carried it everywhere ever since. I just want to appreciate how she took the extra time in her day to be kind and say how much it meant to our family.
Sincerely,
Happy Customer

Taking Care of Business by Taking Care of Customers
We work for one of the greatest organizations in the world, and each of us plays a part in ensuring its future. One of the ways to do that is by focusing on identifying new sources of revenue. Every day, new businesses are opening up, providing opportunities to gain new customers. I want to start off by saying thank you, because our district has done a great job with the Employee Engagement Programs. We ended FY21 Q3 with almost $70 million in projected sales through Clerks Care, Customer Connect, Business Connect, Rural Reach, and Mail Handler leads.
This week, I am happy to announce that Dallas and Houston were chosen as the pilot sites for the new USPS Connect Local. This new offering will help small businesses provide local-to-local same-day or next-day package delivery at affordable rates. Business owners will be able to sign up at www.uspsconnect.com and use USPS Click-N-Ship online to enter package information, print shipping labels, prepay for postage and receive tracking numbers all in one place. Then they will bring their labeled packages directly to the back dock of a designated local postal facility first thing in the morning (5–7 a.m.) for same-day delivery, or 30 minutes before the back dock closes to receive next-day delivery to the ZIP code areas served by that location. They will then present their SCAN form and packages to the clerk and our carriers will deliver the packages as part of their daily routes.
Three offices in the Dallas area were chosen for the initial USPS Connect Local pilot launch:
• Joe Pool Post Office, located at 5521 S. Hampton Road, servicing ZIP Codes 75224, 75232, 75237 and 75376
• Juanita Craft Post Office, located at 3055 Al Lipscomb Way, servicing ZIP Codes 75204, 75210, 75215,75223, 75226, 75246, 75315 and 75371
• Beverly Hills Post Office, located at 2202 S. Cockrell Hill Road, servicing ZIP Codes 75211, 75233, 75236 and 75249
Please familiarize yourself with this new initiative, especially because it will continue to expand to other Post Offices in our district. USPS Connect is a major component of our organization’s 10-year Delivering for America plan and is expected to contribute to the plan’s goal of $24 billion in net revenue growth by offering direct access to the Postal Service’s delivery network. Each of us, no matter what job we perform, has a stake in the success of our organization and one of the ways we take care of our business is by taking good care of our business customers.

Preventing Heat-Related Illness
As summer approaches and the days get longer, the dangers of working outside during hot weather also increases. Knowing how to work safely in hot weather can help prevent heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Heat exhaustion symptoms include cool, moist skin; heavy sweating; headache; nausea or vomiting; dizziness; light headedness; weakness; thirst; irritability; and a fast heartbeat. Here are first-aid guidelines for people who experience heat exhaustion: Call 911; sit or lie down in a cool, shaded area; drink plenty of water or other cool beverages; use cool compresses or ice packs if available; and do not return to work that day.
Heat stroke symptoms include confusion; fainting; seizures; excessive sweating or red, hot, dry skin; and a very high body temperature. Here are first-aid guidelines for people who experience heat stroke: Call 911; rest in a shaded, cool area; loosen clothes; remove outer clothing; use a fan and place cold packs under armpits if available; wet clothing with cool water; apply ice packs, cool compresses or ice if available; drink water or other fluids as soon as possible; and stay with the victim until help arrives.
The following are some proactive steps to avoid heat-related illnesses:
• Hydrate before, during and after work. Drink at least 8 ounces of water every 20 minutes.
• Dress appropriately for the weather. On warm days, wear light-colored, loose-fitting and breathable clothing to keep your body temperature down.
• If you experience discomfort while wearing a face covering, remove it until the discomfort ceases. However, you should continue to practice social distancing when you come into contact with others.
• Use the shade to stay cool. When possible, use shaded areas to stay out of direct sunlight.
Thank for all that you do to serve our customers throughout the year, but especially during the summer months. Remember to watch out for signs of heat illness in yourself and your co-workers and report any symptoms to your supervisor right away.
