A Message from the Acting District Manager Scott Hooper…

Driving Safely During the Winter Months

To highlight the importance of driving safety, the Postal Service has designated December as “Motor Vehicle Accident Prevention Month.” Historically, December is when the Postal Service experiences an uptick in accident activity. Winter weather, temporary workers, increased workloads, and the holiday season all contribute to this increase. Here are some tips for safer driving during winter time:

·         Keep a safe distance between you and other vehicles. Expand your following distance when surface conditions are slick, and/or visibility is low.

·         Do a thorough vehicle check before starting out, paying special attention to tires and windshield wipers. All glass surfaces and mirrors must be free of snow, ice, and frost.

·         Drive appropriately for the road conditions. Do everything slowly and gently. In snow and ice your tires are just barely grabbing the road. Accelerate slowly and gently, turn slowly and gently, and brake slowly and gently.

·         Think ahead and plan your moves carefully. Be aware of everything going on well to your front so that you can accelerate and decelerate gradually. If you get into a skid: get your foot off the pedals. Look in the direction you want the front of the vehicle to go and steer gently in that direction. Once you get back to where you need to be, gently turn the wheel in the other direction to straighten your wheels.

I would also like to take this time to thank you for your dedication and commitment to our customers during this holiday season. Our Dallas District Postal Family accepted, processed, transported, and delivered record levels of mail and package volume. May the New Year bring each of you good health, happiness, and prosperity.
